Modular, sustainable and adaptable – NextOfKin Creatives Design has reshaped the way we think about furniture design thanks to Caracol LFAM technology Heron AM.
Traditional furniture-making is rooted in craftsmanship but often results in significant material waste. The challenge was to create a sustainable collection that preserves artisanal quality while leveraging cutting-edge additive manufacturing.
The solution
In collaboration with Caracol, NextOfKin Creatives developed a collection of modular, stackable furniture that minimizes waste and adapts to changing environments. Leveraging large scale 3d printing and using only the material needed, the client reduced excess production while creating a dynamic and customizable design system.
The team explored various configurations by prototyping 1:5 scaled 3D models. This iterative process helped refine the structural integrity and aesthetic balance of the modular components. The adaptability of the design ensures that each piece can be reconfigured to suit different spaces and functions.
Additive manufacturing meets craftsmanship
After 3D printing the PETG and PLA modules, Nok integrated traditional craft techniques into the furniture to add warmth and character to the final pieces. Drawing inspiration from weaving methods, they used durable leather rope to bind the components, enhancing the layered texture of 3D printing and seamlessly blending high-tech manufacturing with timeless artistry.
The final collection offers a range of multifunctional furniture, from stools to shelving units, demonstrating the potential of LFAM in sustainable design. This project exemplifies how innovation and craftsmanship can coexist, leading to furniture that evolves with its users while minimizing environmental impact.
