Caracol contributed to the transformation of the historic Torre Capitolare in Porto Venere into a unique luxury suite, combining heritage restoration with advanced manufacturing. The project demonstrates how LFAM technology can enable complex, bespoke interior elements while respecting historical architecture.
Originally built in 1161 as a defensive tower, the structure has been restored and reimagined as an exclusive hospitality space, blending history, design, and innovation.
Design meets technology in a historic context
The interior design and furnishing elements of the suite were developed in collaboration with designer Federica Cristaudo, using Caracol’s LFAM robotic system to create large-scale, complex geometries inspired by the movement of the sea.
All furniture elements were produced using recycled polypropylene reinforced with glass fiber, combining sustainability with high performance. The contrast between the ancient stone structure and the modern 3D printed interiors creates a distinctive aesthetic and spatial experience.
Caracol’s robotic additive manufacturing system—based on a multi-axis arm and pellet extrusion—enabled full control over geometry, material usage, and production parameters, ensuring both flexibility and precision.
Production data
- Technology: LFAM robotic system (multi-axis)
- Material: Recycled PP glass fiber (rPP GF)
- Application: Interior furniture and design elements
- Process: Large-format 3D printing from pellet materials
- Design approach: Custom geometries inspired by natural forms
The use of additive manufacturing allowed the integration of design complexity with efficient, scalable production.
Sustainability, design, and long-term vision
The project embodies a forward-looking approach to architecture and interior design, combining circular economy principles with high-end aesthetics:
- Sustainable materials: Use of recycled plastics and natural materials
- Circular design: Furniture designed to be replaced and recycled over time
- Design freedom: Creation of organic, complex shapes not achievable with traditional methods
- Cultural integration: Dialogue between historical architecture and contemporary design
- Production efficiency: Reduced waste and optimized material usage
- Flexible use: Space designed for both luxury hospitality and cultural activities
Torre Capitolare represents a new model where advanced manufacturing enhances heritage spaces, creating unique experiences while promoting sustainability and innovation.
