Pixom transforms digital concepts into physical reality, crafting extraordinary lighting objects designed by humans and manufactured with Heron AM robotic arms.
Translating abstract script into a design piece requires a combination of technical and creative considerations, balancing concept, function, production, and materiality. The formal essence of the Gosper Lamp sums up all these actions exploring the Gosper curve algorithm, a recursive fractal that generates continuous, labyrinthine organic lines.
Pixom is a Portuguese company specialized in 3D printing, robotics and generative design. Its mission is to humanize technology through (re)generative design and artificial intelligence, creating design objects that blend aesthetics and technology. The collections created by Pixom introduce a new vision of contemporary design, emphasizing the dialogue between technology and emerging human needs.
To achieve the freedom and flexibility needed to bring these intricate organic forms to life, Pixom relied on Caracol’s LFAM Heron AM technology. Its high adaptability and design versatility allowed for maximum creative expression, enabling designers to push the boundaries of traditional manufacturing with efficiency and precision.
Pixom enhances the unique shape of Gosper curves as an input for the lamp surface design, creating a series of layers that diffuse light in various ways. The plasticity of recycled PET-G offers varying levels of transparency and translucence depending on the properties of light, which can be adjusted through a cell phone app. The lamp is available in two sizes: floor and table, with different heights and diameters.
LFAM setup and key advantages
- System: Heron AM, HA Extruder
- Nozzle size: 3 mm
- Material: rPET-G
- Print time: 13 hours
- Post-processing: Connection (with screws) to a machined metal base
The use of recycled PET-G reinforces the brand’s commitment to sustainability, while the intricate geometries enabled by advanced robotic manufacturing technology allow for unique and customizable aesthetics. This project is a testament to how technology and design innovation can converge to create functional, artistic and environmentally friendly lighting solutions.
