We were among the winners of the design competition Expo Dubai 2020 “Connecting Spaces”, promoted by Regione Lombardia to give an international spotlight to Italian manufacturing companies and young designers. The goal of the design competition is to create objects that can connect people or spaces in the Italian Pavillion during Expo Dubai 2020.
In collaboration with one of our Designers, Edoardo Puglisi, we interpreted this theme by creating Carosello, a rocking chair for two. The concept behind Carosello is to design a timeless childhood game in a contemporary way to establish a connection between two people through playfulness. Also, the project is explicative work of Caracol’s values: innovation through sustainability.
Following the design phase, we engineered and manufactured Carosello thanks to our patented 3D printing robotic system. This proprietary additive technology is able to overcome the limits of traditional 3D printers in terms of size, shapes and materials.
Also, being able to directly process recycled plastic shreds, we used recovered plastic from plastic bottles, mixed with coloured PLA pellets to 3D print Carosello. This circular economy-oriented design allows wasted materials to be reintroduced into the production cycle and to give them a new value.
The project was shown at Homi 2019, among the other winners of the Dubai Competition, as an exclusive presentation before its actual exhibition during Expo Dubai 2020 as part of the Italian Pavillion.
